What is PEPPOL?
PEPPOL (Pan-European Public Procurement OnLine) is a set of technical specifications and infrastructure that enables businesses to exchange electronic business documents — primarily invoices — through a standardized international network.
Originally developed for public procurement, PEPPOL has been extended to B2B transactions across Europe. It uses the UBL 2.1 (Universal Business Language) standard to ensure all invoices follow a consistent, machine-readable format.
Important Deadline
Belgian PEPPOL Mandate: January 1, 2026
The Belgian government has mandated that from January 1, 2026, ALL businesses operating in Belgium must use PEPPOL for B2B electronic invoicing. This means:
- All invoices between Belgian businesses must be sent electronically via the PEPPOL network
- Paper invoices and PDF-by-email will no longer be legally compliant for B2B
- Businesses need a PEPPOL Access Point to send and receive invoices
- Invoice formats must comply with the UBL 2.1 standard
